Biography

Chris Allen was born on 3rd March 1954 in Gorleston-on-sea, Norfolk. He began his musical career as a clarinettist, starting at school when he was 13. He studied at the Royal College of Music (1972 - 75) with Colin Bradbury and Stephen Trier.

Following a brief freelance orchestral career he settled in Bedfordshire to work as a woodwind teacher and composer, continuing to play both orchestrally and as a soloist. He has to his credit a number of educational publications, including studies for clarinet, saxophone and bassoon - all of which feature in the Associated Board examination syllabus. He has written much other music ranging from solo and chamber works to large orchestral, band and choral pieces. His music is published by ABRSM, Hunt Edition, Spartan Press, June Emerson, Piccolo Press, Goodmusic, Phylloscopus, Bandleader, Brass Wind and Heugel, and in 1999 he won the Sibelius Christmas competition for composing a demonstration score and became one of the SPNM's 'short-listed' composers.

Among his hobbies are walking, astronomy and cooking. He lives in Buckinghamshire with his wife, stepdaughter and terrier; he also has a daughter whose birthday he shares almost to the hour.
