Michael Blake
Biography
b. 1951 Cape Town. Studied at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Goldsmiths' College, London, and Rhodes University, Grahamstown. Active as composer and pianist; also promotes new music and teaches. Resident in London 1977-97, and in 1986 founded ensemble London New Music, for which he was conductor and pianist. Directs international contemporary music festival New Music Indaba at Grahamstown, and is President of ISCM South African Section, NewMusicSA. In 2000 established 'Growing Composers', a project for training composers from
previously disadvantaged South African communities. Output includes orchestral, choral, chamber and instrumental works, opera and music for film and video.
