Senior Management Reorganisation at ABRSM

In recognition of their outstanding contribution to the ongoing work of the organisation, the following senior managers have joined the directorate of the Associated Board with effect from 1 February:

  • Tim Arnold ­­- International Operations Director
  • Penny Milsom - UK Operations Director
  • Eugene O’Donnell - IT Director
  • Nigel Scaife - Syllabus Director
  • Clara Taylor - Chief Examiner

Director of Examinations announces retirement

Philip Mundey, Director of Examinations has announced his decision to retire on 31 July 2007, following a career that has spanned more than 30 years in music education.

Commenting on Philip’s departure, Richard Morris, Chief Executive of the Associated Board, said:

“Throughout his 20 years at the Associated Board, Philip has stood for the absolute integrity at the heart of our work, and has provided outstanding leadership and flair in the development and delivery of the Associated Board’s examinations.  He has made a major contribution to music education in the UK and internationally.  After the end of July he will be greatly missed by all his colleagues, who will be wishing him every success with his new directions.”

Senior management restructure

In view of Philip’s departure, senior management responsibilities will be restructured as follows, with effect from 23 April 2007 :–

  • Director of Publishing, Leslie East will assume the expanded role of “Executive Director: Syllabus and Publishing”.  In this new role, he will take on supervisory responsibility for the ongoing research and development of examination syllabuses as well as for ABRSM Publishing and the planning of its publishing programme.
  • Chief Examiner, Clara Taylor will retain all her current responsibilities.  She will take on additional responsibility for the direction of the examinations administration team, the quality assurance office, the theory department and the theory moderating team.
  • Ben Selby will take up the new post of Publishing Director with responsibility for the day-to-day management of the operations of ABRSM Publishing, reporting to Leslie East. 

Commenting on these changes, Richard Morris said:

“The organisational changes announced today reflect the closer integration of all our activities and are designed to further enhance the quality and delivery of Associated Board exams, publications and services to all our customers.  This new structure will ensure that we are in the best position to successfully implement our future plans and to retain our position as the world’s leading music examination board and a major supplier of services for the teaching and learning of music.”

Biography - Philip Mundey

Philip joined the Associated Board twenty years ago as Head of International Division and was subsequently appointed Director of Examinations in 1990.  Prior to this, having taught in schools in Bristol and Nairobi, he became Director of the Kenya Conservatoire in 1983, was Principal Conductor of the Nairobi Orchestra and lectured at Kenyatta University, Nairobi.
