ABRSM Publishing triumphs at MIA Awards 2007

Spectrum for Clarinet

ABRSM Publishing is delighted to announce that Spectrum for Clarinet has been voted Best Classical Publication at the Music Industries Association (MIA) annual awards ceremony held at The Savoy, London, on 10 October.

The award was accepted by Ian Mitchell, clarinettist and compiler of Spectrum for Clarinet, an inspiring collection of specially commissioned pieces by 16 of today’s finest composers. The volume comes with a CD recording of all 16 pieces.

Ben Selby, ABRSM’s Publishing Director, said: “We're delighted to have again won an award for Spectrum - the third MIA award for this series. Spectrum has played a major role in introducing contemporary music to a new audience, the series having sold some 35,000 copies since the first piano volume was released in 1996. This award recognises ABRSM's commitment to supporting living composers, and we thank all those who voted.”

The hugely successful Spectrum series was established by ABRSM Publishing with pianist and teacher Thalia Myers, with the goal of commissioning some of the finest composers to write pieces of modest length and difficulty, while preserving the essential characteristics of their compositional style, providing technically accessible music for players of all ages and abilities.

The series now encompasses four piano albums and one for cello, with a volume for violin in preparation. The series has resulted so far in the publication of 171 new compositions by 115 composers. The first two piano albums - Spectrum and Spectrum 2 - have already been celebrated with MIA awards.

The best book of contemporary music for clarinet I have seen. My students could not wait to get playing the pieces - the ultimate recommendation.”  Music Teacher
